Cut tree or potted tree: what’s the difference?

Cut tree or potted tree: what’s the difference?
François Hofer

When choosing your Christmas tree, two options often present themselves: the cut tree, which has grown in the ground, and the potted tree. Both can be beautiful and natural, but their journey and future after the holidays are very different.

The cut tree: grown in the ground

A cut tree grows directly in the soil for several years. It takes about ten years to reach 2 meters. This is where the difference is fundamental: its roots have everything they need to spread deeply and widely. This extensive root system allows it to draw water and nutrients further down in the soil, promoting rapid growth and an impressive span.

When harvested for Christmas, the tree is cut at the base. It no longer has roots and cannot be replanted after the holidays.

The cut tree remains a natural option when it is grown locally and valued after Christmas, for example as compost or mulch.

The potted tree: a living tree accustomed to constraint

A potted tree grows with its roots in its container. This technique is called growing in a container. The tree is first planted in a small pot, then it will be transferred every 2-3 years to a larger pot to accommodate its growth. This allows the tree to keep its entire root system intact.

Constantly developing in a constrained environment profoundly changes its development :

  • A slowed growth : The fir tree grows slower than its counterpart planted in open ground because space and resources are limited.
  • A controlled span : It will naturally reach a smaller size.
  • A specific resistance : It is by living in this restricted volume that the fir develops a unique resistance. It gets used from the start to evolve with very small reserves of water and food, which makes it more capable of surviving in a pot after the holidays.

After the holidays, it can be placed outside, continue to live in a pot or, depending on its development and the available space, be planted in open ground.

This solution, however, requires some attention: regular watering, suitable exposure, protection of the pot in case of severe frosts, and repotting when the roots lack space.

Why can't we just put a cut fir in a pot?

A cut fir cannot come back to life, even if it is placed in the ground or in a pot. Without roots, it can no longer absorb water or the nutrients it needs.

In contrast, a real potted fir has its roots: it is this essential difference that allows it to survive after Christmas.

And the fir in a clump?

There is a third category often confused: the "balled" fir. It is a fir that has been planted in the ground, then retrieved with part of its roots and planted in a pot. This fir is very little resistant. Indeed, it has not been accustomed since its youth to grow in a constrained environment. Its root system, developed for life in the ground, suddenly finds itself in a cramped space without having acquired the necessary resilience to survive this transition. It risks deteriorating quickly because it lacks the fundamental adaptation gained by firs raised from the beginning in container.

In contrast, a true potted fir has its roots and is used to constraints: it is this essential difference that allows it to survive after Christmas.

A more conscious choice for the holidays

At Ecosapin, we believe that a Christmas tree can have a story beyond the month of December. Whether it continues to grow in a pot or is valued after the holidays, every fir deserves a simple, local, and resource-respecting approach.
